To understand the beef, you must know thee history and significance behind the rivalry.

The purpose of a beef explains how the beef began in the first place and how it is significant to the artist's career, beliefs, and history.

An incredibly important part of a beef is the audience. Without viewers the beef would not be of significance.

This website was created by the students in Dr. Kenton Rambsy's English 3347-002: "The Greatest Beefs" at the University of Texas at Arlington. Throughout this course, we studied some of the most prominent rap beefs in history including the Malcolm v. MLK beef, the Nicki Minaj v. Lil' kim beef, Tupac v. Biggie beef, and the Jay Z v. Nas beef. In this class, we explored the idea that rap  was an extension of African American literature. To prove this, we focused on the idea that "rap beefs" occurred throughout African American literature; therefore, rap can be inducted into this genre as modern-day poetry. Rap Beefs have been used to promote social change, heighten awareness about the content of the beef, and establish dominance and credibility which are some characteristics of African American Literature. On this website, we will walk you through the history of our four main beefs, explain the significance of each beef, and reveal how the audience plays a key role in the success of each beef.
